Some remarks on Slip Sliding Away: The Open in MOOC .

* Is it an open course when you do not have to register?
If you do not register how could you get in touch with teachers, students? In my opinion a course is a social event, participants working together .
On the internet you will find “how-to’s”, content to learn without the social component. Reading a book on your own could be learning without the social component.

* Is it a course when having full access to all the content?
Open access to content is very important. But Open Access does not make a course. Open Content is not always necessary for an Open Course. In an Open Course on Modern Art you will not be permitted to engage in the 4R activities with the works of art of the Museum.

* Does a course need content presented by the presenter of the course?
A course is not a bucket of content dumped on the internet. “Thrown over the wall” as we say here. I know of university courses starting  without a reader or content.

  1. The ideas of an open community, open course, open content are all interrelated. In the OC (k12) I am hoping to distinguish open content and creative open content. (The content is given vs the content is created) Another dichotomy to me is Open Education and Open Learning. (The content is open but the teaching is structured and closed in an LMS vs the content is open, remixed and recreated by the learners).

    So I will present some basic content as a “platform” to guide the process, then encourage synchronous collaborative activities to “create” digital artifacts and also advocate for reflective individual artifacts as well. (Created by the learners)

    In math or English – you don’t jump into algebra or Shakespeare, you start off by creating a foundation and then digging “deeper” into the application of content. I’m thinking along these lines…Start off with basics – then encourage application and creativity?

    However – I agree that in k12 you need to have some sort of “registration” system. So I am considering one of the most open LMS options Canvas Infrastructure – so I can register learners – so I can be aware of whom they are interacting with. If you want to be part of my k12 open world, you can’t be anonymous. I wouldn’t let you come and speak to my students in a f2f classroom without knowing who you are – why would I change the rules for k12 online learning?

    While “pure” connectivist open learning advocates for totally open- spontaneous learning, I want to offer what I can as a parent, learner and educator.

  2. Jaap, thanks for your blog. You remarks on whether we can talk of a course when there is no readers or content, sounds almost Zen like – does a falling tree still make a sound if there is no one else in the forest to hear it crashing (or something to that effect). Maybe we should consider having a Zen MOOC – with no content and no promise of readers? 🙂

  3. Your comments on open and what makes a course reminded me of independent study courses that, in theory, students design for themselves. Practice is often another matter. I want to think more about that.

  4. Thanks for your comments, appreciate comments because you make me think in new directions. In commenting you act as teachers.
    About Zen, I do not know much about Zen. I know of little not very clear stories Zen-masters tell their students to teach them. The students are encouraged to think about these little fragments and find a lesson in the story.
    About practice: That is an other matter. In the start of learning a skill the teacher has to observe the way the student enacts the skill and the teacher has to give feedback as soon as possible. That is to prevent the student to learn the wrong way of doing a skill.

    A MOOC is a more of a discussion platform than a teaching environment, I agree on you when you want your K12 give some more guidance. For most students need some help and some guidance.
