Ah! sunflower, weary of time,
Who countest the steps of the sun,
Seeking after that sweet golden clime
Where the traveller’s journey is done;

Where the youth pined away with desire,
And the pale virgin shrouded in snow,
Arise from their graves and aspire;
Where my sunflower wishes to go.

Ach zonnebloem, vol ongeduld,
Je telt de schreden van de zon,
Op zoek naar dat zoete gouden land
Waar de tocht van die reiziger ten einde is.

Waar de jeugd vervlogen van verlangen,
En de blanke maagd verdwenen in de sneeuw,
Verrijzen van hun graf en opgaan;
Naar waar mijn zonnebloem heen wil.
