Questions: One chapter in Against Violence is titled ‘Technique and violence’ – does Verhoeven talk about the reductionist and action oriented nature of technique.
I think he does. Verhoeven considers technique and technology as loaded with myths, values, ideology, etc. Verhoeven stresses the need for thinking about technique, critical reflection on aspects of technique. Technique has a objective aspect and an aggressive aspect in the ways means are used. (alleen maar kijken p. 70)
Verhoeven : Technique often is introduces with help of the broad but hollow and empty rhetoric about the healthy and salutiferous effects of powerful and drastic action in critical situations .
I wonder about its application the ‘banking method’ of education?
Verhoeven alleen maar kijken p55 translation me:
After all, all education from low to high, is a large factory in which this culture of obviousness is reproduced and where every wonder and every question be nipped in the bud. All teaching methods is designed to reduce the new to the familiar. The process has the obviousness as a goal and product.
Teaching which stresses the importance of wonder and wonderment would be a method of diminishing obviousness
Every thing would be turned around. Now The teacher asks questions and the student has to reproduce the answer. Like a dog bringing back a stick.
Awe and wonder and questions without answers are unbearable in schools and are ridiculed and laughed at.
The answer has to be produced at once and reproduced. The answer is a product, it is made. The question preceding this answer is a product too. What cannot be made needs not exist in a culture of products and obviousness and indifference, and blassé-ness. Reality is only important as far as it is made by humans and can be used by humans.
Verhoevens warns against the making of wonderment as a product.
There are goals that can only be achieved by passivity. And these goals are not the least important. What is said here about sleep can also be said about happiness, insight, love and peace, about all which, if only by the scope of their meaning, withdraw themselves from the grasp of self-empowerment. The essentials of life are given to us, beginning with pure existence itself. This insight alone is enough to end the autocracy of activity.
