Awe inspiring

Reverence (engels) is een emotie waarin men zich klein voelt door bewondering voor iets groots. Ontzag lijkt me een goede vertaling. Het begrip heeft voor mij een religieuze gevoelswaarde en het begrip slaat ook op de emoties die men kan hebben in tegenwoordigheid van pausen of koningen en andere hoogwaardigheidsbekleders.  Ik kan bewondering hebben voor iets of voor het gedrag van iemand. Maar ontzag hebben en mezelf klein voelen is daarbij niet inbegrepen.

I had to look up reverential respect. Reverence is an emotion that you feel small by admiration for something big. Ontzag seems like a good Dutch translation. The concept for me has a religious connotation and the term also refers to the emotions that one can have in the presence of popes and kings and other dignitaries.
I can admire something or admire a person’s behavior. But awe (ontzag) and  feeling small is  excluded.

Reverence is seen … as “acknowledging a subjective response to something excellent in a personal (moral or spiritual) way, but qualitatively above oneself” ^[3] Solomon describes awe as passive, but reverence as active, noting that the feeling of awe (i.e., becoming awestruck) implies paralysis, whereas feelings of reverence are associated more with active engagement and responsibility toward that which one reveres.^[4] Nature, science, literature, philosophy, great philosophers, leaders, artists, art, music, wisdom, and beauty may each act as the stimulus and focus of reverence.

Deference implies a yielding or submitting to the judgment of a recognized superior out of respect or reverence.

Mediational data demonstrate that the effects of awe on prosociality are explained, in part, by feelings of a small self.

Josef Pieper Rust en kultus, rest and cult

Josef Pieper was christelijk filosoof en het is dus niet onverwacht dat zijn artikel Rust en Kultus uitkomt bij het christelijke sacrament en de christelijke viering.

Josef Pieper was a christian philosopher that is why you could expect he does write about christian sacrament and celebrating in the end of his article about Rest and Cult.

Pieper ontkent de mogelijkheid om rust te vinden buiten een religieuze cultus… Niemand hoeft te verwachten dat een echte cultus kan ontstaan op grond van menselijke beginselen: het behoort tot de natuur van de cultus dat die ontspringt uit een goddelijke bepaling…

Pieper denies the possibility of finding rest outside a religious cult … No one can expect a real cult to arise by virtue of human principles: it belongs to the nature of the cult that it rises from a divine provision …

Pieper maakt scherpe scheiding tussen werk en rust, tussen geestdodend en geestverheffend, tussen de doordeweekse werkdagen en de zondagse rust. Die scheiding maakt het onmogelijk om te denken over mengvormen en over doordeweekse rust.

Pieper makes sharp distinctions between work and rest, between mind-numbing and uplifting spirit, between the workdays in the week and the sunday rest days. This separation makes it impossible to think about mixing work and rest, and about weekdays with periods of real rest.

Stilte, inkeer, bezinning, contemplatie zijn begrippen die Pieper verbindt met rust. De rust die Pieper bedoelt is niet het uitrusten in de pauze tussen de werktijden.“De leegte die ontstaat door het ontbreken van de eredienst wordt gevuld door louter doden van tijd en door verveling, die direct gerelateerd is aan het onvermogen om te genieten van vrije tijd; want men kan alleen maar te vervelen als de spirituele kracht te ontspannen is verloren gegaan. Er is een vermelding in Baudelaire … “Men moet werken, zo niet omdat jehet wilt dan tenminste uit wanhoop, Want om  alles te reduceren tot één waarheid Werk is minder saai dan genot“

Pieper links rest to Silence, contemplation, reflection. Pieper does not mean with rest the time of the pause or the break between shifts. “The vacancy left by absence of worship is filled by mere killing of time and by boredom, which is directly related to inability to enjoy leisure; for one can only be bored if the spiritual power to be leisurely has been lost. There is an entry in Baudelaire… “One must work, if not from taste then at least from despair. For, to reduce everything to a single truth: work is less boring than pleasure/rest.”

About connectivity and disconnecting.

Reading http://forum.networkedlearning.net/t/welcome-to-the-boundaries-and-limits-of-networked-and-connected-learning-hot-seat-discussion/259/3 Question about borders on connectivity. @dustcube wrote about a border being  ‘solitude and contemplation’ – which is inevitably private, and ‘off-grid’ – and it has been a key factor for most people who describe their experience of learning.

The comment of @dustcube made me think of the need of silence and solitude in humans. Some very connected students with a lot of friends do at times want to be left alone. Jenny Mackness has a story about the need for silence … but the cacophony of voices and relentless activity silenced me. I simply could not find my voice.
That connected to Stillweb, http://stillweb.org/. It is a bit of a paradox to be online to find stillness. It is an illustration of the need for private contemplation and rest.

Stilte; Stillness

John Cage schreef het stuk 4’33” A Silent Symphony.
“Ik heb niets te zeggen
en ik zeg het
en dat is poëzie
zoals ik het nodig had”

Een opname van het stuk staat in de Daily Stillness.
Ik vind het opmerkelijk dat het stuk zo spannend is. Het is dezelfde spanning die een rust in de muziek kan oproepen. Rusten in muziek zijn moeilijk, het vereist concentratie om een rust te spelen.

In the Daily Stillness. is a recording of 4’33”.
It is a very exiting piece of music. I think every rest in music has that nature. In music a rest is difficult because it needs concentration to play a rest.
